Mural Artworks

Our Retaining Wall Mural Project. From Scars of Landslides to Symbols of Resilience.

In Madikeri, the landscape tells a story of both beauty and challenge. Following the devastating landslides, sturdy retaining walls were built to protect our community. At Mind and Matter, we saw these grey concrete structures as more than just physical barriers, we saw them as a canvas for conversation.

Our Mural Initiative transforms these walls into vibrant landmarks that speak openly about mental health. By blending local culture with powerful messages of well-being, we are breaking the silence, reducing stigma, and reminding every passerby that their mental health matters.

The Evolution of the Canvas:

The First Stroke (March 2024):
Our journey began with artist Roopashree, whose work, ‘My Kodavathi Beauty,’ honored the strength and heritage of our local community. This piece set the foundation for using art to connect deeply with the people of Kodagu.

A Growing Movement (April 2025):
The initiative gained momentum as we expanded the project with five additional murals. Each piece was brought to life by a different artist, tackling vital themes ranging from emotional resilience and empathy to the importance of seeking help.

Why Murals? Art transcends language. By placing mental health awareness in public spaces, we make these "difficult" conversations accessible to everyone from students walking to school to tourists visiting Raja Seat. These walls now stand as a testament to our community’s resilience: what was once built to hold back the earth now helps hold up the spirit.
